OPERATING SYSTEMS

Before knowing about operating system, we should know about some terms and types.

software:

software is a group of interrelated programs that perform some defined tasks.

Types of Softwares:

1. System Softwares: ( Operating System )
to operate the system it is used. with out this we can't able to do
2. Application Software :
It is a software that satisfy the user needs eg. MS Office, Tally, etc...
3. Driver Software:
the driver software is the hardware supporting software. or otherwise it is the interface software for hardware( like printer, sound) and the operating system software.

OPERATING SYSTEMS

what is operating system?
operating system is an interface between the user and the system. or otherwise it is an interface between the application program and the user.
operating system act as a platform to run an application program.because without loading any operating system, we can't run any application programs like MS office, tally, games, AutoCAD, etc
some of the operating systems: MS DOS, Windows, Linux.MACos, solaris, UNIX,

Types of Operating System:
  1. Character User Interface (MS DOS, Unix)
  2. Graphical User Interface (Windows, Linux)

DISK OPERATING SYSTEM: (DOS)
DOS is used to operate the system in the character mode using keyboard by typing commands. this type of OS are old versions.

DOS commands classified into two types:

internal commands:
Internal commands are in-built in the file called COMMAND.COM that acts as an interpreter between user and the PC.

external commands:
The commands, which are not loaded in the file COMMAND.COM is called as external commands. These external command needs a separate file execute them.
eg, chkdsk, backup, format,etc.
